Understanding Antique Indian Silver

Kutch Silver Filigree Plates — Set of Four, view 2

Silver has a special place in Indian homes. It held water for prayers, sprinkled rose water at weddings, carried paan after a meal and travelled in trousseaus from one family to another. Antique Indian silver is more than precious metal: it is a record of how people lived.

Purity is not always what you expect

Many older Indian silver pieces were made before standard hallmarking, and purity varies widely from region to region and maker to maker. Some pieces are close to pure silver; others contain a good deal of copper for strength. A missing hallmark does not mean a piece is not silver, and a stamp alone does not prove its purity. For valuable pieces, ask for a metal test.

Regional styles worth knowing

  • Kutch: famous for dense, deeply chased floral and animal decoration.
  • Lucknow and North India: elegant forms such as paan daans, rose-water sprinklers and boxes.
  • Bidri (Bidar): not silver itself, but a dark alloy inlaid with fine silver patterns.
  • Everyday ritual silver: kamandals, lamps, bowls and puja items, often plain but beautifully proportioned.

Signs of age and hand-work

Look for small irregularities from hammering and chasing, softened edges where hands have held a piece for years, old repairs done by hand, and a soft grey patina in the recesses of the decoration. Machine-perfect symmetry and razor-sharp edges usually point to recent production.

Patina: clean gently, never strip

The soft tone in the hollows of old silver is part of its history and its value. Remove light tarnish gently with a soft silver cloth, and avoid harsh dips and buffing wheels, which can erase detail and patina in minutes.

Storing silver

Keep pieces dry, wrapped in acid-free tissue or anti-tarnish cloth, and away from rubber and wool, which speed up tarnishing.
