How Antique Coins Are Authenticated

Coins are among the most collected objects in the world, and among the most faked. Whether you are looking at a Mughal rupee, a British India coin or an ancient punch-marked piece, authentication follows the same patient logic.
1. Weight and size
Most coins were struck to a standard weight and diameter. Specialist catalogues list these figures. A coin that is noticeably too light, too heavy or the wrong size deserves a closer look. Use an accurate digital scale and calipers.
2. Metal
The wrong metal is a common giveaway. A magnet test catches some fakes instantly, since silver and gold are not magnetic. Specific-gravity tests and non-destructive XRF analysis can confirm the composition of more valuable coins.
3. Casting versus striking
Genuine coins were struck between dies, or for ancient pieces punched, giving crisp detail and a characteristic metal flow. Many fakes are cast in moulds, which can leave tiny pits and bubbles, soft and mushy details, and sometimes a seam around the edge.
4. Style, dies and details
Experienced numismatists compare the lettering, the style and the small die details with known genuine examples. Wrong fonts, impossible dates or mint names, and “too perfect” surfaces are warning signs.
5. Wear and toning
Natural wear appears first on the highest points of the design. Natural toning develops slowly and evenly; artificial toning often looks blotchy or unusually bright.
6. Independent grading
For important coins, recognised third-party grading services examine, authenticate and seal coins with a certificate. A good dealer will welcome independent checks.
A note on the law
In India, coins more than 100 years old can count as antiquities under the Antiquities and Art Treasures Act, 1972. Ask your seller about this before you buy older pieces.
